The citizens of Delaware chose the final design by popular vote. Engraved by designer William Cousins, the Delaware State quarter features Caesar Rodney on horseback, and has the caption,”The First State”, and the date 1787, which signifies the original year Delaware became a state (December 7, 1787).
Caesar Rodney was the president of Delaware from March 31, 1778 through November 6, 1781. A signer of the Declaration of Independence, he served his term during most of the American Revolution. It’s only fitting that he be remembered on the back of the Delaware State quarter.
